Canadians say they’ll back Zoellick.

Canadian finance minister Jim Flaherty told reporters in Ottawa today that he was consulted this week on the World Bank president nominee by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson. While he would not confirm the name we all know, Flaherty said the nominee “will be good for Canada.”

“Canada has been asked for its input, and we’ve given our input,” Flaherty said, according to Bloomberg. One activist in Canada I spoke to today clearly indicated that while the finance minister may have been consulted, this is not the same as Canada as a whole giving the thumbs up.
